Why Deming?
Why Now?

Many people have never heard of Dr. W. Edwards Deming–and if they have, they think of him as the “quality guru” who was responsible for the Japanese industrial miracle that was chronicled in the June 24th 1980 NBC documentary called, “If Japan can, why can’t we?” At the time USA industries were being clobbered by Japanese competitors whose products were of high quality and low cost.

deming_newThe NBC documentary unleashed a revolution of quality in the United States and in other parts of the world. Deming who was 80 years old in 1980 lived until age 93, working until ten days before he died. The demand for his insights was so great that he kept a schedule of working 6-7 days a week; long days, traveling, speaking, and consulting.

Deming’s basic approaches to quality were so powerful and gave USA companies such a lift in productivity and profits that most never looked deeper than the basics.

deming_outMention Deming—and if you don’t get a blank stare, you’re likely to hear, “Been there, done that.”

Actually,... not.

Not even the Japanese companies that follow Deming’s approach very closely –and have moved beyond the basics—have learned all there is to be learned from Deming.

Although the actual percentage is unknown and probably unknowable, our estimate from experience with companies around the world is that about 80% of what Deming had to offer in his New Philosophy of Management is untapped. Unknown and untapped.

80pct

And that means opportunity.

In today’s world of the “new normal” of slow growth and no growth, Deming is more relevant than ever. Why? Because to succeed in a new normal world, an organization mush have superior productivity, superior competitiveness and superior learning. That is exactly what Deming provides.
